NAUGHTY NACHOS!

Even monsters, ghosts and goblins love nachos. Serve these up and maybe they won't eat you!  Feel free to substitute ground turkey for the hamburger and low fat cheeses to cut down the calories (eeeek!).

You can set these up as a do it yourself nacho bar to make it easier on yourself. Just put the meat mixture in a chafing dish and the other ingredients in bowls and let your guests do their own thing!  I would replace plain avocado with my Halloween Guacamole "Goblets of Gloppy Green Goo" for a DIY Nacho bar, and add a bowl of chopped green onions, diced jalapenos, olives or whatever you like on your nachos!

CRABBY DEAD BRAIN

This is my very popular crab mousse all dressed up for Halloween.  I've been doing this recipe since the 1970s for my parties and it's always the first thing that disappears.  For Halloween I make it in a Brain Mold I found for jello at Amazon.  The mold has some intricate shapes in it so make sure your spray it well with some spray cooking oil and it will come out nicely.

A FEW OF HALLOWEEN FACTS:

Over $1.5 billion is spent on Halloween costumes each year and more than $2.5 billion on other Halloween paraphernalia.

86% of Americans decorate their house for Halloween. About 50% of adults dress up for Halloween.

10% of pet owners dress their pets in Halloween costumes.

BRITTLE BONES MERINGUE COOKIES

These meringue cookies are very light, airy cookies that are very easy to create. The whole key is in the baking so follow the directions closely. I make these all year long although I don't bake them in bone shapes! You can use any flavor that you like in place of the lemon.

I love dipping these in dark chocolate too so it might be fun to have a little fondue pot of very dark chocolate next to them!

A COUPLE OF HALLOWEEN FACTS:

The word “witch” derives from the Old English words “wicca”(female) and “wicce”(male). This later became “wicche”, in Middle English.

There really are vampire bats, but not from Transylvania, they live in Central & South America & feed on the blood of animals

GREAT PUMPKIN HALF MOON PIES

Every Halloween table needs to have at least one pumpkin treat - even if it is already loaded down with scary sweets from Trick or Treating. These little pumpkin tarts in the shape of a half moon are easy enough to make and give your guests sweet tooth an alternative.

I go the easy route with these, I use pre-made pumpkin pie filling and prepared pie dough. Anything that saves time and energy when you're hosting a Halloween party is a boo-tiful thing! If your pumpkin pie filling isn't spiced be sure to add some Pumpkin Pie Spice to the mix and feel free to cut out some mini Halloween shapes as the vents!

A COUPLE OF HALLOWEEN FACTS:
  • Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States.
  • Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers in the number one spot.

HALLOWEEN PARTY FOODS - Bloody Skull Spread

BLOODY SKULL SPREAD

This is a simple cream cheese appetizer that has gone over to the dark side for Halloween. Taking the idea of pouring your favorite salsa over some cream cheese for a quick snack I've simply dressed it in a Halloween costume of a molded cream cheese skull surrounded by a bloody pool of salsa. I don't pour it over the skull because I don't want the salsa to hide the skull shape.

You can use a full skull mold or several individual skulls if you prefer. I found my Skull Cake Pan at Wilton, it's actually for a 3-d cake so I only used the front side. You can get Smaller Skull Cupcake Molds on Amazon.

Be sure to stop by every day until Halloween for a new Halloween Appetizer! The previously posted Halloween party food links are below.

A COUPLE OF HALLOWEEN FACTS:
  • Ancient Celts thought ghosts roamed the countryside on All Hallow's Eve wearing masks so they wouldn't appear human.
  • Bobbing for apples originated from the roman harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.

BARBEQUE BAT WINGS

Halloween is next Sunday and if you're planning a Halloween party be sure to include these Barbeque Bat Wings on your buffet table! Wings are always a hit and this recipe is one of my favorites - full of flavor but not hot enough to kill your palate.

Made in the classic buffalo wings style, these wings have a little bit of kick from the chili powder and a nice complexity from the red wine or broth and spices. Make a big batch - those goblin guests will gobble these down faster than you can catch the bats!

A FEW HALLOWEEN FACTS:

Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland - people placed candles in hollowed out turnips to keep away ghosts during Samhain.

Samhain is a Gaelic festival that was celebrated on October 31st for the end of Harvest. The word "samhain" roughly translates to "summer's end"
.

Halloween was brought to North America by European immigrants who celebrated the harvest around a bonfire with ghost stories.
